VRCover Oculus Quest covers unboxing and review

vr cover quest review

VR Cover is a Thai company that produces accessories for VR headsets since 2014, and it has recently started selling covers for the popular Oculus Quest as well. Discover in this review how they are!

VR Cover is a veteran company when it comes to VR accessories: I remember buying my first VRCover accessory in 2015, because we had to showcase our ImmotionRoom full-body VR solution at the WTT in Turin (Italy). We needed something to protect the facemask of our Oculus DK2 so to let 100+ people try our solution guaranteeing the best hygiene conditions. So we bought a waterproof VR Cover cover for our headset, and we installed it, so that the sponge of the facemask was now covered with a plastic material, and we could use sanitizing wipes on it between every usage, and offer a good service to our booth visitors. It worked very well, and we were pleased with how it helped us in serving better our users.

5 Years later, VR Cover is not only still in business, but it is one of the most famous manufacturers of VR headsets accessories. And its main expertise is still the one about covers that you install on your headset’s facemask so that you don’t make it dirty.

The Thai company has just sent me a package full of covers for the Oculus Quest to review it: do you want to discover with me how they are?

VR Cover T-Shirt review

The Virtual Reality Pattern T-Shirt is a nice T-Shirt that VR Cover makes for all us VR enthusiasts. It is one of my favorite VR pieces of apparel because it’s kinda funny, and it is the nerd equivalent of the T-shirts full of palms that you may wear on the seaside.

It features lots of different headsets (yes, even the Vive Focus!) drawn in white all over a black background. The material is very good, it fits me and I love how it does look.

If you want to be the coolest guy (or girl) at a VR party, it is the gadget to buy. Ah, it costs $19.

VR Cover for Oculus Quest review

This is a 100% cotton cover for your standard foam facemask of the Quest. Its purpose is to absorb all the dirt and the sweat from your face, and get dirt instead of the original foam on the device. When it is dirty enough, you can remove it and wash it, so that to keep your device always clean. The original pack contains 2 covers, so that while you’re washing one cover, you can still use your device with the other one.

I’m usually not a huge fan of fabric covers, but this one is quite good. It comes in the box with a free cleaning cloth a piece of paper indicating all the instructions to install it, and two covers.

The simple instructions that explain how to install the cover

The installation was very straightforward thanks to this written instructions and just required me to unlock the Quest facemask, put the cover around it, secure it with the cover’s elastics, and put the modded facemask back into the headset. That was it. It required me like 2 minutes.

When I put the modded Quest on, I noticed that there were pros and cons of having the cover on. The biggest pro (apart from the fact that the cover was keeping my headset clean) was that the fabric material of the cover was far more comfortable to wear than the original foam of the Quest. My skin loved it!

The cons were due to the fact that the thickness of the cover changed the ergonomics of the device, that so weighted more on my cheekbones and less on my forehead. It was slightly more uncomfortable. Also, the light leak in the zone surrounding my nose was a bit larger than usual.

Anyway, the overall experience was nice. If you’re interested, you can buy the VRCover cover for Quest at $19.

VRCover Facial Interface & Foam Replacement Basic Set for Oculus Quest review

The Facial Interface & Foam Replacement Basic Set for Oculus Quest is a set to change completely the facemask of your Oculus Quest, so to use a new cushion covered in leather.

As for the product described before, VRCover provided a free cleaning cloth and very easy-to-follow instructions: the installation was a matter of two minutes. The set consists of a new facial interface that must substitute completely the one provided with the Quest: so you unlock the original one and install this one by VRCover. The VRCover facial interface is different from the original one because it is all covered in velcro. Thanks to this, you can install on it easily new facemask cushions provided by VRCover that are covered in velcro as well.

Comparison between original Quest interface (left) and VR cover one (right)

The facemasks in this set are made in leather or similar material. I like leather facemasks because IMHO are better suited for exhibitions, since they don’t soak in sweat, and can be cleaned easily with antibacterial wipes. And I love that this set already provides you two leather cushions, so that when one is too much dirty, you can wash it and in the meanwhile use the other one. Changing cushion, thanks to the velcro mechanism, is a matter of like 30 seconds.

Removing a facemask using the velcro is very easy

Anyway, I have to highlight that this is not a perfect gadget either. All leather facemasks always result a bit more rigid, and less comfortable than the ones made by fabric and/or foam and this is no exception to this rule. Furthermore, the upper part of the cushion, that is the one curved more so that to follow the shape of the Quest, features various folds of the leather, that give not a pleasant sensation to the skin they touch. It feels as if they were slightly scratching the skin.

And then, this cushion, as the previous one, causes a bigger light leak to the device.

Notice the thickness of the cushion: this causes more light leak in the nose region

At the end of the day, I liked this kind of cover, and most probably, I will use this set in all the upcoming exhibitions of our products for Oculus Quest. If you’re interested in Facial Interface & Foam Replacement Basic Set for Oculus Quest, you can buy it for $29 on VRCover website.

VRCover Universal Disposable Hygiene Covers (Extra Pack) review

The Universal Disposable Hygiene Covers (Extra Pack) is probably the product that I loved the most from VRCover. Have you ever been at a VR showcase and had to wear one of those damn disposable VR covers that you attach with elastics to your ears?

This things have been designed in hell

If yes, you know how they are damn uncomfortable: they feel bad on the skin, they move all over your face while you install the headset, and also while you play with it. You have 90% of chances they finish on one of your eyes. These things are necessary to guarantee hygiene but are so uncomfortable that can ruin the VR experience of the users themselves.

VRCover solves this problem in a very smart way. It offers white adhesive disposable covers that you can stick onto the leather cover described in the previous paragraph (they CAN’T be installed on the standard Quest facemask).

Single disposable cover. Here I’m uncovering the adhesive glue

Since you attach the disposable cover to the headset, it stays fixed there, and can’t annoy the user in any way while he/she uses the headset. The adhesive glue is strong enough to resist a full VR session, but weak enough to be removed easily.

Zoom on the material of the cover. Looks how it has been carefully crafted

Besides that, the manufacturing quality is very high and the comfort is much higher than the one of standard cheap disposable masks. They also improve the comfort of the leather cover, because they feel softer than it. Best gadget ever.

The Universal Disposable Hygiene Covers (Extra Pack) can be bought for $17 (pack for 50 covers) or $29 (pack for 100 covers) on VR Cover’s website. They’re more expensive than the other disposable masks (in China we bought 100 of them for like $4), but the quality is also much higher.

And that’s it with my review of VR Cover accessories for the Oculus Quest! What do you think about them? As always, let me know your impressions (or ask me whatever question) in the comments section or on my social media channels!
