I’ve received today a press release by Pico about the upcoming Neo 3, and since no other VR outlet seems to report it, I thought it could be a good idea to inform the community about it.

In this communication, Pico Interactive highlights some of the specifications of its future standalone headset:

  • Qualcomm XR2 chipset
  • 90 Hz Curved Display
  • Wi-Fi 6
  • 3 Physical IPD adjustments
  • Optical Positional tracking, with 4 tracking cameras
  • Optical Tracked Controllers, with 32 tracking points
  • All-PU materials fabrication, for easier sanitization

The headset is going to be launched on the Chinese market as a consumer device on May, 10th. The Enterprise version, intended for the Western market, is expected for “Late Summer 2021”. The company highlights that more information about it “is coming soon”.

This announcement comes with a quote from Henry Zhou, that is the CEO of Pico:

These innovative product developments follow our B and B+ funding rounds earlier this year. From our new optical controller-tracking solution to complex environment positioning, the Neo 3 is building off of the Neo 2 to offer the latest technology to give users an amazing, immersive experience. Between the Pico Neo 3 headset’s state-of-the-art-technology and Pico’s new publishing division –Pico Studios– developers have the tools to get even more creative with the apps and games they create.

It is also available a new photo of the headset, that you can see here below.

From it, it is noticeable how Pico took the balanced setup of the Neo 2, which was much more comfortable than the Quest, and has updated the optics and the processing power, which made it inferior to the Quest 2. Now the gap between Pico and Oculus has been zeroed on the specifications’ side. But of course, there are many other things to consider, like the price, the available content, the quality of the tracking, etc… I guess we’ll discover them in the upcoming weeks.

For now, I’m glad to see that Facebook’s competitors are moving well: also HTC is going to release its headset soon…
