How to give or receive a game as a gift using the Oculus app
The process to make gifts on the Oculus Store using the Oculus companion app is incredibly easy. Oculus has made a great job in making things straightforward, and it is also pushing a lot this new gift feature highlighting on the home page of the Store all the best games to gift to your friends.
The procedure to make or receive a gift is similar. In both cases, you have to go to the page of the game on the store, but instead of clicking the big blue button with the price that you usually use to but the game for yourself, you have to click on the small three-dots button that is on the right. When you do that, you will be presented with two options:
- Gift the game to a friend of yours
- Redeem the game if someone has gifted it to you.
In the case that you want to give it as a gift, you will be asked for an e-mail address of the person you want to give the gift to, plus a personalized message that you can associate with the gift. If you confirm this data, a new screen will ask you for your payment info through which you can pay for the game for your friend. After that, an e-mail will be sent to the e-mail address you specified, with your personalized message and a custom code to redeem the game.
If you are the lucky guy/girl that has received a game as a gift, you have got an e-mail with all the data to redeem it and in particular the redeem code. To add the game to your library, there are two possible paths that you can follow:
- Going to the store page of the game, click the three dots button, and select that you want to redeem a game (as you can see in the picture I posted above);
- Going to the Settings tab of the Oculus app, in the “Payment” section you will find the entry “Redeem Code” with an asterisk icon next to it. Select it to tell that you want to redeem a game;
In both cases, you will be presented a simple screen with a textbox inside which you can paste the code that you have received via e-mail. Confirm it and the game will appear on your library, ready to be installed on your device!
How to give or receive a game as a gift using the Oculus web store
You can also make gifts using the web version of the store. The procedure is incredibly similar. You have to go to the page of the game that you want to gift and below the button with the price you will already find two links to give the game as a gift or to redeem it.
If you click on the link to make a gift, you will be asked again for an e-mail and a personal message…
… while if you click the link to redeem it, you will be asked for a code, exactly as with the app.
Now it’s your time to make a gift!
As you have seen, buying a game as a gift on the Oculus Store is incredibly easy, so it’s time for you to make a lot of VR gifts for your friends! This way you will make people happy and at the same time support the VR developers 🙂 And remember that there is not only the Oculus Store, but you can also buy games as gifts on STEAM!
I hope this tutorial will be useful for you and I wish to you and your friends Happy VR Holidays!
